I have the distinction of being perhaps Dr Maurer's most experienced patient in terms of the tendon reinsertion surgery. In 2009, after more than 6 months of ineffective treatment due to a misdiagnosis by others, I was referred to Dr Maurer by a co-worker who sang his praises highly. I certainly understand why. After months of limiting my activity due to heel pain he gave me a plan. We did try PT but ultimately felt the surgery was necessary. As a registered nurse I was not as apprehensive of the surgery as some might be- I was afraid of the recovery. Although it does take time, the steady progress I made with physical therapy kept me going.
When I started having the same pain in the other heel later that year I knew what I had to do. We opted for surgery sooner this time and it went just as well. Unfortunately, I fell down the stairs on my crutches 3 weeks post-op and had to do the whole thing over yet again! Following the fall Dr Maurer met me at his office on the Sunday of the 4th of July weekend just to reassure me. We knew that nothing could be done until after the 4th but I rested so much more comfortably after seeing him. He worked me in to the OR on the first possible day and we started the whole process over again. I confess that those first 2 weeks are hard; it's not comfortable trying to sleep with your legs up on a laundry basket but it was so worth the inconvenience.
His office staff was always available for questions and they gave me the best advice for making it work on one leg for 6 weeks (9 in my second case). It's been a little over a year since my second surgery and I'm back to hiking and enjoying all the activities I missed out on for almost 3 years (due to needing 3 surgeries). I actually miss seeing Dr Maurer and his staff regularly. They make the unfortunate situation of pain and surgery almost pleasant! I have recommended him to everyone I can. I cannot sing his praise loudly enough. If you are facing the scary prospect of living with limiting heel pain or having surgery that requires a fairly lengthy recovery, opt for Dr Maurer and the surgery. The time it takes to be made whole again will seem like nothing when you're back on your feet and feeling good!
Why did I wait so long??? I had been in severe pain when walking or standing for over a year when I first met Dr. Maurer. During that prior year, I had gone to see several different professionals about my foot pain and the consensus from all of them was that I was suffering from Plantar Fasciitis, likely imposed from the recent birth of my son, and for which there was no great remedy. I was prescribed custom orthotics, was given stretching and icing exercises and was advised to ‘wait it out’. Well, while waiting it out, the pain never improved, although I was committed to seeing what tomorrow would bring. When we were finally planning our son’s first birthday party and I could still not walk without significant pain, I surrendered and asked for a referral to a podiatrist to see if there was anything else that could be done for my Plantar Fasciitis.
Within 5 minutes of seeing me the first time, Dr. Maurer confirmed the Plantar Fasciitis diagnosis, but also said “plus you have a broken foot” to which I’m sure he could have bottled the expression of disbelief and complete shock I gave him. What? It’s broken? I asked him “wouldn’t I be unable to walk if it was broken?” To which he replied, “Yes, it would be extremely painful to walk.” Wow!!! In my mind I figured if it was broken, I wouldn’t even be able to take a step, and there would be swelling, and on and on. I very quickly learned that wasn’t true and started to come to terms with having a broken foot that for at least a year had been unable to heal. The x-Rays don’t lie and there it was very clearly on the screen, I had a broken bone in my foot!
While we had this fact nailed down within just a few minutes of my first visit, Dr. Maurer is a firm believer in complete assessment, and very expertly assessed my range of motion, walking gate, and numerous other factors that led him to provide me with what I know was a complete and thorough plan for treatment of not just the Plantar Fasciitis, but also the broken bone, and an additional issue within my ankle that was actually creating more pain than the first two issues combined! Without a thorough diagnosis, resolving the Plantar Fasciitis or broken bone would have not provided complete relief, and my treatment plan would have been much longer. When Dr. Maurer advised that surgery to remove the broken bone was the best resolution, I was admittedly nervous. Not because I didn’t want it fixed, but more that I was nervous about a surgery that would render me completely non-weight bearing for several weeks. I lead a busy life and have a family to take care of and I really didn’t want to stop for a minute let alone several weeks. Dr. Maurer was very aware of my concerns and definitely gave me options to stay involved with my treatment plan and to ensure that at the end of the day, surgery was my decision.
After weighing all of the pros and cons, I agreed to proceed with surgery. By the time the date of surgery arrived, I was very calm and ready and this was in large part due to the partnership that had been established with Dr. Maurer. The bottom line is that I knew the only way out was through, so I wanted to get on with the healing and couldn’t wait to walk again. Surgery went well, and the 4 weeks of non-weight bearing went by remarkably fast. Those weeks were followed by a return to limited weight bearing with crutch assistance and that was very quickly followed by physical therapy rehab. I was surprised and delighted to discover that during the rehab process, full mobility had been returned to my broken foot! Several weeks later, the scar was almost unnoticeable and more importantly, I was walking pain free! Words of gratitude hardly express what free mobility is like and I am only asking myself why I waited so long to see a specialist, and someone who cares as much about my walking as I do! This past weekend I was able to take my son to the zoo and walk the entire park pain free. I was overjoyed at being able to spend the day with my family walking around and realize that the act of walking is such a blessing!!!
Thank you Dr. Maurer!
I feel so lucky to have found Dr Maurer. I first checked my insurance site to see which foot doctors they accepted. Doctor Maurer's office answered right away and could give me an appointment the following day. On the first appointment as with all appointments here I feel like I was given the doctor's full attention. He explains things well, has multiple ways of examining the foot problem and showing me what and where the problem is. He asks lots of questions and listens. As I was going on a month-long trip he gave me multiple options for treatment and expedited ordering orthotics and medications for the immediate term and then explained what we would be looking at for the longer term. That was a fairly complicated operation which sounded scary to me. He suggested I go for a second opinion and I did and then opted to have Dr. Maurer do the operation. This doctor loves what he is doing and it is comforting to put yourself in the hands of someone so certain about the work to be done and the subsequent rehabilitation. The office gave me a couple of previous patients to call and I did and was reassured by them that they had a similar problem and all turned out well and they were happy and even had another operations done by Dr Maurer.
And now I too am happy with the result of the operation and would go to him again for a foot problem. He and his team are friendly and efficient and always available (he came even came in on a Saturday for me!).
I wish I would have found Dr. Vincent sooner! After being treated on and off for over three years for tendonitis in my right ankle, the pain continued and intensified. I decided that it was time to seek a second opinion. I found Dr. Vincent through the internet, made my appointment, obtained my previous x-rays and then arrived at his office. I was greeted by a very pleasant and professional staff and amazed at the thorough exam I received by Dr. Vincent. Not only was the exam thorough, but Dr. Vincent spent the time explaining everything to me in detail in terms I could understand. We arranged for an MRI and subsequent surgery. Anytime I called the office with questions, I received a prompt same day response.
On the day of surgery, Dr. Vincent came to talk to me for a few minutes prior to surgery, he was very caring and alleviated any anxiety I was feeling about the impending surgery. Following surgery, I was pain-free!! I worked with a physical therapist for several months to regain mobility and strength. I was impressed by how Dr. Vincent worked with the physical therapist to develop a convalescent program to meet my needs. I always felt that by their communicating back and forth I was confident that my care was in excellent hands and never doubted I would have a full recovery.
I am so very grateful to Dr. Vincent and his staff for their dedication, care and support. I have resumed everyday activities and most importantly, have been pain free for more than a year, all due to finding the right physician. I can't thank Dr. Vincent enough!!!
